Discovering the Fells through Letterboxing

As Youth Program Director for FoF, my ultimate goal is to create a connection between children and nature that will last a lifetime.   When parents enroll their children in our programs, my hope is their exploration of nature will not end when the program ends or when the hike is over. As we provide frequent opportunities for families to visit the Fells with our trained guides, my hope is that parents and children alike will eventually develop the confidence and desire to explore the forest on their own. Our newest youth and family program is aimed most directly at achieving that goal.

In October, we will be launching a Passport Program, whereby hikers will follow a set of written instructions to discover hidden letterboxes in the Fells (you can read more about the pastime of letterboxing here).  We will hide a total of four letterboxes throughout the Fells. Inside each box, you’ll find a unique rubber stamp, inkpad, and a notebook and pencil. You will be asked to leave your mark (a signature or stamp of your own) in the notebook, and to stamp your FoF passport. The passport will be available to print from our website.

We have been working with Adina Davies from the Jewish Community Center of Boston to design this activity, and Adina will be leading a hike to discover the first of our letterboxes on Sunday, September 28th, 10-11:30am, starting from the Long Pond parking lot. Please note that registration is required, and Adina will have copies of the passport available for those who register. For more information, please visit the JCC website:

Please consider joining Adina to get a head start on filling up your passports, and keep checking our website for updates about this new program!

I am interested in getting some information in bringing a Brownie troop from Winchester to the Fells for a hike/letterbox activity. Could you direct me to who I can speak to for more information?
    Thank you,
